At approximately 10:15 p.m. Thursday, Asheville Police Department (APD) officers responded to a call on Warren Avenue, where they found a man severely beaten. The seriously injured victim was immediately taken to Mission Hospital for treatment.

As officers investigated the scene, they identified Stroup as the suspect and conducted a welfare check at a nearby home on Warren Avenue. There, they found the body of Jennifer Rose Gerard, who had been fatally attacked. Signs of theft were evident at the scene.
