The second arrest has been made in connection with the January 25 shooting in Monroe, Georgia that led to the tragic death of Teonia Stokes, a 22-year-old college student and pregnant mother. Stokes, who was just months away from graduating and welcoming her baby, was shot early in the morning, leaving her family and community in shock.
Police first arrested Dorrius Brooks immediately after the shooting, but less than a month later, on February 20, authorities announced they had also arrested Cordarious Williams, who was with Stokes at the time of the incident. Williams, who was also injured in the shooting, now faces charges in connection with the crime.
According to Monroe police, both Brooks and Williams are believed to have played a role in Stokes’ death, with officers alleging that their actions resulted in his fatal shooting. Although the exact relationship between Stokes and the suspects is still unclear, his family expressed grief over the loss of someone who was full of promise and potential.
Stokes was a standout student at Kennesaw State University, where she made both the Dean’s List and President’s List for several semesters. Despite graduating in elementary education, she was committed to her studies and had a passion for teaching. In addition to her academic success, Stokes was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her child, whom she had been dreaming of bringing into the world.
“She was full of hope, full of life and full of promise,” her aunt Cal Durham said in a statement to the press. “All she wanted on this earth was to be loved.” Stokes was seven months pregnant at the time of the shooting, and her family is mourning both her death and the unborn child she was expecting.
Williams and Brooks face multiple charges, including felony murder, feticide and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. In addition to the charges against Williams and Brooks, Brooks is facing additional charges related to aggravated assault and reckless conduct.
As the investigation continues and legal proceedings unfold, the community is shocked by the loss of a young woman with so much potential and a bright future. The arrests bring some resolution to a heartbreaking case, but the pain of losing a beloved daughter, sister and friend to Stokes will linger long after the court hearing.
