The fourth victim, who was taken by ambulance, later succumbed to his injuries, bringing the total number of deaths to five.

Pierce County Executive Ryan N. “The heartbreaking violence on the Key Peninsula today left five people dead, including the suspect who was shot by a responding deputy,” Mello said in a statement. He expressed his condolences to the affected families and thanked local law enforcement and fire officials for their efforts at the tragic scene.
A lone deputy, who arrived at the scene shortly after receiving a report of the stabbing, was involved in an exchange of gunfire, resulting in the death of the suspect.
