A disturbing scene unfolded on the night of March 6 in Mount Washington, Kentucky, when police arrived at a home to find a man covered in blood and his wife badly beaten. Richard Cheshire, 67, now faces multiple charges, including murder and abuse of a corpse, in connection with the death of his wife Bonnie Cheshire.
Officers were called to the couple’s home at around 9:09 pm on Friday night after receiving reports of a violent incident. When police arrived, they found Richard Cheshire standing near the open garage door, his clothes covered in blood. Inside the garage, officers found the lifeless body of Bonnie Cheshire, who had been beaten so brutally that her face was “unrecognizable,” according to arrest documents.
Investigators believe the attack began inside the home, where they found a trail of blood leading to the area where the attack occurred. The victim’s body was reportedly dragged into the garage, where a club-like piece of wood, which appeared to be covered in blood, was found. Authorities also found evidence that Richard Cheshire may have attempted to move his wife’s body: a pickup truck was parked at the garage door, with boards installed as a ramp up to the truck bed. Bonnie Cheshire was found wrapped in a garden hose near the temporary ramp.
As of Monday, March 9, Cheshire has been charged with murder-domestic violence, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse. He was scheduled to appear for arraignment later that day.
The horrific nature of the crime has left neighbors in shock. “It’s worrying,” shared one neighbor. “I’m so sorry for the family and the neighborhood.”
The Mount Washington Police Department has said it will not release additional details about the investigation at this time, citing the ongoing nature of the case and out of respect for the families involved. Officials also assured the public that there is no immediate threat to public safety.
This tragic incident has shocked the community as they wait for more information about the investigation and the indictment of Richard Cheshire.
