Fresno, California. – A united California community is in shock after a 14-year-old student collapsed during gym class at a Fresno high school and was later pronounced dead. Daniel Padilla Jr., a beloved teen known for his passion for basketball, video games and telling jokes, tragically passed away on Monday, March 9, leaving friends, family and classmates heartbroken.
The incident occurred around noon during PE class when Padilla suddenly collapsed while playing basketball. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, and Padilla was taken to a nearby hospital, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead later that day. The causes of his fall and subsequent death are still under investigation.
A spokesperson for the Fresno Unified School District said, “We are saddened by this loss and offer our deepest condolences to Daniel’s family, friends and the entire school community.” “At this time, we do not have any additional information to share, but we are providing support to our students and staff during this difficult time.”
In the wake of Padilla’s passing, the district has made mental health professionals available at Fresno high schools to provide counseling and emotional support to students and staff who are grieving the death of the young teen.
Padilla’s sister, Hailey Valdovinos, made a gofundme Campaign to help cover funeral and burial expenses. In his tribute, Valdovinos described his brother as a “silly kid” who loved spending time with his family and friends. Basketball was one of his favorite hobbies, and he was known for his sense of humor and close relationship with his siblings.
“The loss of Daniel has left a huge void in our lives, and we are devastated by his unexpected and unexplained passing,” Valdovinos wrote in the GoFundMe description. The fundraising campaign has raised over $10,000 of its $18,000 goal, as the community has come together to support Padilla’s family during this challenging time.
Although the cause of death has not yet been determined, the family of Daniel Padilla Jr. is mourning the loss of a vibrant young man with a promising future. His memory will be cherished by those who knew him as a loving son, brother and friend.
