A community in Queensland, Australia, is grappling with the heartbreaking discovery of a mother and her young daughter being found dead in their home just hours after the child’s father was hit by a car on the outskirts of Brisbane.
Kate Paterson, 38, and her 1-year-old daughter April were found at their Bellivah Road home on Thursday, February 11. The tragic scene unfolded after emergency services responded to a car crash involving 39-year-old Blake Sears, who was hit by a vehicle on Beaudesert Beenleigh Road, about 10 miles from his home.
Witnesses reported that Sears was seen running down the road with an apparent neck injury before the collision. Detective Superintendent Chris Ahern, who is overseeing the investigation, noted in a press briefing that although Sears had visible injuries, the reason for his actions was unclear. When police arrived at the scene to notify Sears’ family, they found the bodies of his partner, Kate Patterson, and their young daughter, April.
Both victims suffered knife wounds and investigators suspect some sharp weapon may have been used. Ahern described the deaths as suspicious, noting that authorities were still piecing together the circumstances leading to the tragic events. “We’re keeping an open mind about what happened, but it’s clear we are investigating a suspicious death,” Ahern said.
As of Thursday, Sears remains unconscious in the hospital and police have not been able to interview him. Investigators are looking into whether Sears had any history of mental health struggles, which could provide information about the condition.

One resident, Riley Evans, remembered seeing emergency responders arrive at the scene, initially assuming it was a normal car accident. “I thought it was just like a car accident or something,” Evans shared. “Then I found out what happened.”
