The Los Angeles County Sheriff Department (LASD) and the wider Southern California community deputy Marcos Penna Junior are unhappy with the untimely and heartbreaking losses, who lost their lives on 17 June 2025 on Tuesday morning. The disastrous incident occurred at West Bound 101 Freeway at Tuzung Avenue in Western Hallwood. The accident occurred at around 2:17 pm, causing immediate concern and all the streets on the west side closed because the authorities responded to the deadly scene.
According to the California Highway Petrol (CHP), the collision included a Black Kia SUV, which was unnecessarily closed in the active lane of traffic for the reasons under investigation. Deputy Penna, who was off-duty at the time, and another person-the identity still unknown-was out of the vehicle when an international box truck collided with them. The effect of the accident was devastating, and both individuals tragically lost their lives at the scene. Despite immediate rescue efforts, it was clear that neither could be revived.
The driver of the box truck remained at the scene and has been fully cooperative with the investigators. It is not clear whether the driver has maintained any injury, and the authorities are working diligently to determine the cause of the vehicle stopped on the freeway. Possible factors under investigation include mechanical failure, earlier collision, or other unknown conditions that could lead to tragic event.
In view of the accident, the surrounding area experienced significant traffic disruption. The lanes were closed to the west of the 101 freeway, and the traffic was resumed on 170 freeway to the north. Additionally, 134 infections for 101 freeway and Tuzunga Avenue on-Ramp were both closed for several hours as investigators fought the scene. By noon, the affected lane was reopened, but the investigation continued.

For him, Deputy Pena was not only an associate in law enforcement, but a loving member of the family, and his disadvantage has left a deep hole in his heart.
The tributes that have been replaced by the law enforcement community and beyond it is a will for positive effects that deputy Penna was on those who knew him. Fellow duties have described him as an emerging star, a loyal friend and a figure, who have embodied the main values of service, integrity and respect. His colleagues recalled his calm conduct under pressure, his role dedication to his role and the warmth shared with others.
As the investigation of the accident is going on, the authorities are urging anyone, which may have information or dashing footage from the area around the time of the incident. The CHP is working diligently to connect the timeline of incidents together and understand the factors that occur tragic. Although the cause of the incident is under investigation, the community is already rally around the family of Deputy Pena, providing sensations and support during this painful time.
