Batavia, New York-Janesi Community College (GCC) community is in mourning after a sudden and heartbreaking death of Charlie Forkel, a standout student-athlete whose life was tragically cut off in a deadly motorcycle accident in the weekend. At the age of only 20, Charlie was an emerging star – a dedicated student, talented football player, and an extraordinary young man whose absence leaves a painful zero in the entire campus, on football field, and everyone’s hearts who knew him.
Charlie, originally New York, was a prominent member of the GCC men’s football team, celebrated for his tenacity on pitch, natural leadership and unbreakable team spirit. The coach and team partners equally recall a player whose love for the game was contagious – someone who led not only by skill but by character. His every step on the field was inspired not only by a competitive edge, but also with a real love for the game and the brotherhood created.
“Charlie played with a fire and grace, which could not be taught,” a coach said. “But even more, he was a young man of integrity, humility and kindness – a leader in every sense of the word.”
Outside the field, Charlie’s influence was equally deep. He contacted his academics with discipline and ambition, inspired by a deep desire to fulfill a future that introduced his passion to others with the service of others. Whether it was likely to coaching, advise the youth, or to engage in community work, Charlie had a heart for the people and the clarity of purpose that accepted their years.
In class, the faculty members described Charlie as curious, thoughtful and mature beyond their age. He was a student who asked the right questions, supported his peers, and brought a stable, positive energy for every discussion. Friends say that he was a calm confidence, an infectious laugh, and a way to welcome everyone.
Charlie’s life accident is still under investigation, but it is infallible in the grief due to this. On social media and on the Janesi campus, tribute has put Charlie’s warmth, determination and indelible mark in the snapshot that he left so on. His companions are mourning the loss of a brother. His coach, loss of a protog. His classmate and friend, the disadvantage of someone who picked up others easily. And his family, a son’s immense disadvantage, a loved one, a light.
As the community gather in remembrance, they are reflecting not only the tragedy of the tragedy that was lost, but also celebrating the beauty of what Charlie gave in his time. He lived completely. He loved deeply. he worked hard. And he made people better – on and out on the field.
Although Charlie Forkel’s journey was very low, his legacy lives in the life he had touched, the goals followed by him, and examples that he set every day – a life lived with passion, purpose and heart.
“Play every game as if it is your last.” Charlie did – and it was shown.
