As the community grapples with this tragedy, school officials are offering support to those directly affected, including students, staff and their families. The explosion has impacted many Humphreys County graduates, as well as parents, children and grandparents, all of whom are integral parts of the school community.

In the wake of the blast, schools have mobilized to provide essential services for the bereaved. Director of Schools, Dr. Robert Lanham, shared heartfelt words emphasizing the community’s shared grief and resilience. He acknowledged that many people have already faced enormous hardships, from previous devastating floods to now dealing with another tragic loss. Dr. Lanham emphasized the strength of the students, who continue to show resilience and compassion despite their challenges.

Support services available

In response to the tragedy, Humphreys County Schools is offering a range of emotional support resources starting Monday. School counselors, social and emotional learning (SEL) coordinators and Centerstone therapists will be available on site to provide care and comfort. These professionals will be there to help students and staff process their emotions, provide a safe space to talk, and guide them in supporting each other during this difficult time.

Waverly Central High School is donating the proceeds from its game gate to help families associated with their school who have been affected by this tragedy. McEwen High School held its event free of charge and encouraged donations to formal relief efforts once it was held.

Dr. Lanham expressed pride in the leadership of Principal Crowell (WCHS) and Principal Wallace (MHS), noting how both have demonstrated empathy, compassion, and heart during this time. The students’ spirit continues to inspire their community, showing how even in the face of heartbreak, they refuse to give up and continue to care for others.
