Flint, Michigan 18 November 1978 – Keith Edmonds’s early life was filled with unimaginable pain and tragedy. At only 14 months old, he suffered horrific abuse at the hands of his mother’s boyfriend, who, enraged by the baby’s crying, placed Keith’s face in front of an electric heater. Keith suffered serious injuries as a result of third-degree burns that covered 50 percent of his face. This horrific event set the stage for a long and challenging journey of survival and healing.
What happened to Keith Edmonds?
The abuse left young Keith fighting for his life in the hospital for a month. It would take years for him to recover physically and emotionally. After a hospital stay, Keith was transferred to the Shriners Burn Institute in Cincinnati, where he continued his treatment until he turned 18. After the abuse, Keith was placed in foster care, becoming a ward of the State of Michigan. Despite the trauma, he is eventually reunited with his mother after she proves his innocence, providing a ray of light in an otherwise dark childhood.
However, the scars of his past ran deep. The abuse Keith suffered led him down a destructive path of drug and alcohol addiction in his twenties, and seeking solace in substances to numb the pain. His struggles were intense, but on his 35th birthday, while drinking heavily, Keith had an epiphany that changed his life.
A turning point: from destruction to liberation
On July 9, 2012, Keith made a vow to himself: “I wanted to be a better person.” That moment of clarity marked the beginning of his journey toward healing and recovery. Keith sought treatment, overcame his addiction and emerged from the darkness with a new purpose in life.
